THOR: RAGNAROK

The idea of pairing the oft-dull Thor with a series of oddball companions is an inspired, if necessary, move - so much so that it's baffling it has taken Marvel this long to smarten up. It's witty, it's weird and it goes against decades of bloated, overserious comics fare. What it lacks in urgency - which is a lot, given that the story involves an extinction-level threat to Asgard and All Who Therein Dwell - it makes up for in alacrity.

For all its brazen gags, its hip soundtrack, and its cool if somewhat hetero-normative heroes , the House That Steve Rogers Built doesn't rush headlong into truly dangerous territory.

LADY BIRD

Gerwig the actress skillfully pivots between the wacky and the poignant, so it's no surprise that Gerwig the auteur so delicately balances hilarity and heartbreak. A finely wrought, deeply felt mash note to Gerwig's hometown of Sacramento, and the rare film about teenage life that puts equal weight on the dark, sad and tough parts, as it does on the joyous, raucous, euphoric moments. It may be about the selfishness and growing pains of its confused and embattled heroine, but it's made from the perspective of an artist who sees the world more clearly now than she did then

LAST FLAG FLYING

Last Flag Flying is a modest, bittersweet thing of beauty. There is a pleasingness to the predictability of the film, which stars Bryan Cranston, Steve Carell, and Laurence Fishburne as Vietnam veterans. It dips a few too many times to stand with the filmmaker's best work, and a few asides into 'wacky old person behavior' are regrettable, but this is another solid dramedy from one of our best working filmmakers. The film follows a familiar template, but the wounds it traces are undeniable.

The haphazard nature of the production undercuts any major dramatic thrust to the point where it muddles whatever it is Linklater's trying to achieve. The best Last Flag Flying can do is offer a subdued salute to a fallen veteran, and that's better than nothing-but there's a tremendous sense of greater potential wasted.
