Black Swan

There's a delirium that runs through Black Swan, a sense of stress and anguish and mad momentum, that's both exhilarating and terrifying. By the end, Nina's quest for perfection-and Portman's blazing performance-will leave you breathless. Audiences won't know who to trust and what is real in this terrifyingly great film that will grab hold of you until the final act.

Magic Mike

The dance numbers, choreographed by Allison Faulk, are inventive and athletic, but not really erotic; Soderbergh never lets you forget that, for these men, dancing is above all a job. Get your singles out and ready, ladies. "Magic Mike" is in the house. Magic Mike might not have a lot to say about its characters or the male stripping industry, but the flashing bottoms, pelvic thrusts, and toned six-packs that Soderbergh does deliver sure are a lot of fun.

Magic Mike XXL

If anything, better than its predecessor: looser, funnier, stranger, and vastly more subversive, a buddy road comedy that unexpectedly evolves into a celebration of female desire. The newcomers on hand, including the Rap-singing lover-boy Andre and Rome, the new sultry mistress of ceremonies with complicated romantic ties to Magic Mike, go a long way toward making us forget that we ever bought into Dallas' club.

How She Move

As we replay last year's step-dance hit Stomp the Yard, the ostensible message about working hard in school gets stomped out of the yard. Thumbing its nose at music video ho's as sex wallpaper, How She Move's got muscular gritty girl power, as females challenge the greater strength and energy of the male performers on their own turf.

Dirty Dancing

Although the plot is sometimes implausible, the movie's music, dancing and romantic spirit carry a lot of it. In addition, Dirty Dancing has the virtues of a female main character (a bit unusual in a coming-of-age movie) and an interesting setting. This is a shapely film, considered and concise. And if its rhetorical slickness eventually covers up its emotional core, that slickness has a pleasure of its own.

Bring It On

Smart, sassy movie, but expect raunchy humor, language. This earnest and arch story -- so fast paced its formulas are wonderfully obscured -- has an adolescent energy and a tempered sexuality, and it's infused with the moral agenda of a warmly didactic sitcom. Lightweight, but unexpectedly feelgood.
